Inrix offers free traffic app for iPhone

E-mail Print PDF

Traffic data aggregator Inrix, the company providing some of the traffic information directly used by BMW in navigation systems, has released a free iPhone app, so you can see the traffic without having to buy a BMW. Inrix traffic app uses a simple interface in particular, a map of your area (found using GPS), which shows the information flow of traffic and accidents on local roads. This information is similar to that which is on a map on-line or in-car navigation device.

When the traffic Inrix app differs from these other stores is its forecast function, which lets you see what the traffic is expected to watch up to an hour in advance.

Inrix collects information from a variety of sources, including local traffic, the fleet of vehicles that serve as traffic probes, times and events, such as sports games. Inrix traffic app adds another source of information: yes. Install and run the application, and his speed and position of Inrix server, improving the quality of traffic data. Inrix not only uses this information to create a living, we study the data to understand historical trends, being able to provide its service to estimate traffic only.

Like most of the traffic reporting service, coverage is limited to main roads and motorways in specific regions. Inrix claims coverage in 126 U.S. cities.

We have executed the application and respect your information for the function of the traffic on Google Maps. Looking at the traffic in the San Francisco Bay Area, Google Maps has clearly way more covered than Inrix traffic. For example, when Google has shown the free flow of traffic on Highway 1 from Daly City to Pacifica, Inrix traffic offered any information. Looking across the country, the coverage by the full Inrix traffic for the city of New York, but we found some areas in which Google has the edge, such as Prospect Expressway in Brooklyn, covered by Google, but no traffic Inrix .

This was not a definitive proof, because there are many other areas of the country to compare. We also do not compare the accuracy of the routes, although in some areas Inrix showed different traffic flows of information to Google Maps.

Despite having one of the most popular online photo services in the world, Flickr has done things the hard way on the iPhone. That is to say for browsing photos they’ve made you go through their optimized website, and for uploading you had to do it through email. Both worked fine, but were not as seamless as a native iPhone application. Now they have that as well. Yahoo’s Flickr app has just gone live in the App Store.
