Mass Effect Galaxy for iPhone is getting mixed but generally positive reviews on iTunes and it’s a good distraction from the arduous wait for Mass Effect 2. There’s another reason to pony up the £2.99 asking price – fast-fingered players who have already completed it have discovered that finishing the game wins you a mysterious reward inside Mass Effect 2.
Mass Effect Galaxy is a top-down shooter with strategy elements. As a spin-off game, it gives you a bit of background to a couple of main characters from the upcoming console sequel and it has a rather tasty cartoony art-style.
You’re probably wondering just how Mass Effect Galaxy knows that you’re going to buy Mass Effect 2 and how it’s going to hook you up with your free goody once it actually launches. It connects to your EA.com account, which presumably means you’ll need to sign into EA.com when you eventually buy the sequel.
Hopefully this won’t be the only time that EA uses its powers of interconnectivity either – we can imagine a lot of EA games could be enhanced by increasing the interaction between mobile and console versions of the same series. The Sims 3 would be an obvious place to start.
As yet, there’s no indication of what the reward actually is, but knowing that Mass Effect Galaxy star Jacob Taylor is playing a companion role in Mass Effect 2, we’d hope that it’s some fancy armour or weaponry for him.
