iPhone NFL Kickoff: Does Madden 10 play nice without buttons?

E-mail Print PDF

The real NFL season is about to launch, and EA has finally taken the opportunity to slide in the launch of its much anticipated port of Madden MADDEN NFL 10 by EA SPORTS for the iPhone / iPod Touch format. Represents the unstoppable force meeting the mobile entertainment industry, and Apple's black slab of wonder, to properties of the gaming industry. Available at $ 7.99 through the opening kickoff of the Steelers-Titans game tonight, and $ 9.99 later, is worth your hard-earned dollars back door? We played last week here  and here is our verdict.

EA took a few weeks to get their act together that Gameloft iPhone did with the NFL 2010. Are you off? Well, in a way, yes. The player models and stadiums in 3D looks better translated Madden NFL licensed and similarly named rival App Store, Gameloft NFL 2010, but a major drawback: the frame rate in our Playthrough 3GS was significantly more restless NFL 2010. An update of future we hope to solve

this problem, but meanwhile does not affect gameplay enough to be a game-murderer. The presentation and commentary are amazing, ready to console level, but anywhere near the PSP and DS versions of Madden. The greatest fear among people who practice any kind of hardcore game is whether the loss of a physical control pad affects the gameplay significantly. The answer is simple: yes, yes. I've played games on my iPhone for over a year, and rarely keeps the feel of a commitment: to lose a control pad, but the increase of a simplified interface and an extremely compact in a smartphone. As to whether it is worth, ask yourself if you prefer to tote around a PSP or Nintendo DS in the pocket, plus your phone, or just carry an iPhone and lose a few checks, and you have your answer.

EA's solution is the same as many developers, including Gameloft: adding a virtual stick in the lower left corner, and a series of context-sensitive buttons on the bottom right. The problem with virtual stick is that, like other titles, you can get lost in the pile of heavy play time approach. There is no tactile feedback, so care must be taken, unlike a real analogue platform. When you play Madden, it means a lot of accuracy is lost. But the good news is that this game was not designed for the finesse game. Let me explain.

When play was called through a series of menus nesting touch, the next play unfolds as a kind of regular game of Madden you'd expect on a console: Players line up, can select the front or receptor cycling intervene directly, and a few changes are possible presnap. It is by far the level of a game console, or even many handheld games, but for a mobile device with no physical buttons is not bad. A new feature particularly great on the iPhone / iPod Touch iteration of Madden 10 is a direct-to-draw method to create instant hot routes for the receivers. It's so fun and easy that potentially redefines the notion of playcalling, and draw your own works is as instantaneous compared with the button menu systems on consoles. It looks like what is available in the Wii version, but more immediately gratifying. After adjustments have been made, breaking is a matter of exploring every screen, then tapping to open receivers to throw - or if it is an execution control back and make a couple movements (turbo, spin, etc.).

When a critical time when it was on offense or defense, a special button slowdown will be a new selection of more specific action buttons.

This means fool, a fast or slow game down to beat pinch holes are two ways to play, and both work reasonably well. In fact, sometimes the game feels a bit like real football console. In an iPhone and priced at $ 10, that's a good achievement.

Having deceleration means that the virtual analog stick and buttons can be more easily reached in those critical moments, allowing EA to put aside the difficulties virtual speed controller of many oriented games. It also means that Madden is beginner-friendly, possibly for the first time in years.

Season mode and QuickPlay options are available, but not franchise or multiplayer yet. EA has hinted at several players from a brief update and DLC attention, such as new uniforms and updates the list (although we expect the list updates are free). Madden costs $ 7.99, until this afternoon Kickoff NFL season, and then rises to U.S. $ 9.99 normal. As we have said Gameloft NFL 2010, that's peanuts for sports fans who are used to spending $ 8 on a dry hot dog. And for our final recommendation between the two parties, while the race was tight, overall playback controls Madden NFL 10 beat 2010 this year. Better late than never. For next year, we expect that competition keeps Gameloft and EA keeping honest, and we hope these issues get cleared even more control - until the iPhone gets its mythical control pad, at least.

Real Racing

Some of us like Pepsi and others a can of RC, but there's nothing like the real thing. Like a bottle of Coca Cola, Real Racing is an effervescent taste of simulation racing that is as classic as it is inventive.   A refreshing reminder of the platform's enormous potential, this slick racer won't convert an arcade daredevil into a simulation stalwart much in the same way you can't convince a Pepsi lover to down a Coke. Instead, Real Racing is a sophisticated, focused game that hits the... Read more...

Ngmoco Won't Be Making iPhone-3GS-Exclusive Games

I'm not upgrading to the iPhone 3GS, and thanks to AT&Ts pricing, I'm not alone. But owning an old iPhone 3G is going to hurt when iPhone-3GS-only games come out. Luckily, Ngmoco has no plans to start that trend. While yes, the new iPhone 3GS brings twice the RAM, a faster processor and better 3d imaging to the table, Ngmoco isn't going to make games that are unable to run on the regular old iPhone 3G. This is the Rolando and Star Defense developer's plan:  "We're scaling the... Read more...
