How to Password Protect Applications on iPhone

E-mail Print PDF

As an iPhone owner, many of my friends love to have a quick look at this arrangement of Sweet Apple. No problem with that but my concern is that I can give my iPhone without potentially giving them access to lots of personal data. (App-mail messages, contacts, call history, browser history, etc.)

Unfortunately, even in 3GS iPhone, you can only set a passcode to access the iPhone screen house but we did not app-specific password protection. I passed the phone around at a party to share a YouTube video or fun website, but you must keep an eye on people to make sure they do not go around with doing things that should not be. As I do not want others to have access to e-mail or SMS or Photos App.

Once again thanks to Jailbreak iPhone community where users can enjoy the app-specific password protection. An iPhone App: Lockdown, available in Cydia has the ability to protect your desired password on iPhone. Lockdown works like a charm on iPhone OS 3.0 and also supports firmware 2.x as well.

How to Password Protect Applications on iPhone

Let me give you a walk through of LockDown

Once you have jailbroken your iPhone. You’ll got a Cydia icon on your SpringBoard.

  1. Launch the Cydia.
  2. Go to Search Tab and search for Lock Down and tap it.
  3. Tap Install button at Top-Right and then Confirm button at Top-Right to begin installation.
  4. After completion, go back to Springboard where you’ll find a brand new icon i.e. LockDown.

 How to use LockDown

 * When you run the application lock for the first time, you will be asked to set a security code and a password. This password will be used to unlock locked and any application to open the lock itself. Security code is useful in case you forget your password blocking.
      * Once you configure the password and security code, you can see all your iPhone applications listed on the next screen.
      * Select any application you want to block, a block button will appear. Pressing the button you selected your application will be blocked and a little 'lock icon appears next to the locked application.
      * Now, if you close Lockdown App and you try to open the application locked (Mail app in this example), you will be prompted for the password to open it. Use the password lock to open the app.

(Once you open the application, operation, and when you close the application will automatically be locked again. So there is no need to re-block in block).

Lets check other options in Lock Down.

* Block Touch to launch it. This time you will be prompted for the password to open Lockdown. Do it.
      * Tapping blocked in blocking any application you are asked if you want to unlock it. Pressing the button will perform the Unlock that unlock App
      * Locked Applications button in the upper right shows all the applications quickly locked and not just browse through all the applications to identify those blocked.
      * Under the Settings tab at the bottom, following options are available: Block Options
            Any questions or Lock
            Any questions or Unlock
or to block this application (ON / OFF)

        Password Management
            Change the security or Word
            or Change Password
            Forgot your password or

        Other settings
Freezing Dylib (If you turn it off, even if you open a blocked application does not prompt for the password. Therefore, it is useful when you use your iPhone for themselves. See details in screenshot).
Move or padlock (When is enabled do not allow anyone to move any icon for preserving the arrangement of your icons.)
Freezing App Deletion (When activated do not let anyone to cancel any application without your permission.)
Enables or Launch Button (When activated, Lockdown shows a start button when you open a locked entrance to the application and password.)

I am using this great application because the day is supported with iPhone OS 3.0. E 'working like a charm and will keep it installed because of its usefulness and certainly recommend it.

Use an external microphone with the iPhone

I wanted to use an external microphone with my iPhone, so I could record audio from an event. Unfortunately, there aren't any cables that give you a real microphone input jack. Fortunately, I was able to find an unexpected solution: the Mini A/V cable that came with my digital camera! On one end, it has the three standard RCA plugs found on the front of every TV. On the other end, it's got a four-conductor mini plug that's the same as the iPhone's headphone jack. Just plug the cable into the... Read more...

Disable iPhone 3.0 Hotspot login on jailbroken iPhones

Phone 3.0 contains a log-in overlay that makes logging into many WiFi hotspots easier. Unfortunately, the implementation makes logging into some WiFi hotspots impossible. When you connect to a WiFi network, the iPhone tries to connect to www.apple.com. If the hotspot uses a captive portal (meaning that apple.com would redirect to the captive portal), the iPhone launches a WebSheet that loads the captive portal, which usually allows you to log into the network. On some networks, however, the... Read more...

Scrolling Safari

If you’re scrolling through Safari, the address bar comes with you, disappearing after the first few swipes. But no matter how far down you’ve scrolled, tapping the top of the screen (where the network and wireless icons are) will instantly rocket you back to the address bar. If you haven’t been to a site with a drop-down search field (like the country chooser on Apple.com), go do so. Apple has even found a way to make that enjoyable. Via:iphonenews.desinformado
