How to set a custom iPhone ringtone

E-mail Print PDF

Now that you have your iPhone, you are ready to set up your own custom iPhone ringtone. With the iPhone, you can set a ringtone for default calls and a specific ringtone for anyone in your contact list, and the iPhone comes with a whole list of ringtones already installed.

How to set your default iPhone ringtone

  • Tap the Settings icon on your iPhone home screen.
  • Tap Sounds to go to the Sounds settings menu.
  • Tap Ringtone to get a list of ring tones.
  • Tap the ringtone you want to use. Any custom ringtones you have loaded into the iPhone will show up first, and when you tap the ringtone, the iPhone will preview it for you.

How to set an iPhone ringtone for a contact

  • Tap the Phone icon on your iPhone home screen.
  • Tap the Contacts tab to bring up your contacts.
  • Scroll to the contact you want and tap their name to bring up their information.
  • Tap where it says "ringtone" to bring up the list of ringtones.

Tip: If you get a lot of telemarketing calls, you can put their numbers under a single contact and set up a specific ringtone so you always know it is just a telemarketer calling. This is really great if you get a completely silent ringtone.

How to get free custom ringtones for the iPhone

There are many sites out there like Myxer that offer free ringtones for the iPhone, but to actually get them on your iPhone you'll need to transfer them through iTunes.

  • Locate and download the song to a specific folder. If folders confuse you, try downloading to your desktop so you can easily locate the ringtone.
  • Once finished downloading, launch iTunes.
  • Drag the ringtone into the left-side menu in iTunes under the Library section.
  • Plug your iPhone into the computer and sync with iTunes to transfer the ringtone to your iPhone.
  • Don't forget to go back and delete the ringtone off your desktop or the specific folder you downloaded it to.

Double-Tapping

Double-tapping is actually pretty rare on the iPhone. It’s not like the Mac or Windows, where double-clicking the mouse means “open.” On the iPhone, you open something with one tap. A double tap, therefore, is reserved for three functions: In Photos, Google Maps, and Safari (the Web browser), double-tapping zooms in on whatever you tap, magnifying it by a factor of two. In the same programs, as well as Mail, double-tapping means, “restore to original size” after you’ve zoomed in.... Read more...

Access Hidden Options in Google Mobile App for iPhone

I really love the new Google Mobile App. It has an amazing voice function, and it’s not a bad looking App. Google, however, has a few tricks up their sleeves in regards to the App. They’re going to reveal more of them during Macworld 2009, but today they’ve unveiled an “easter egg” in the App that allows you to customize a few additional settings including Theme Color, Sounds, and you can turn on two options including Live Waveform and Open Links in App.   To access them you... One way to create YouTube 'QuickLists' on the iPhone

I like to chill and view a number of Youtube videos at the end of the day using my iPhone. Until Apple releases iPhone OS 3.0 and updates the YouTube app to let you log in to your account, you can't use QuickLists to mark videos on your Mac for later viewing on the iPhone.
