A number of iPhone Atlas readers, and more numerous in the Apple discussion boards have reported a group of problems - some large, some small - after updating to iPhone OS 3.1. The next two working procedures for resolving some of the problems identified:
* Restart your iPhone by holding the sleep and home buttons until the Apple logo.
* Restore the iPhone: In iTunes, click the Reset button on the Summary tab. Restore the phone to erase contacts, calendars, photos and other data on the phone, but will restore automatically backed up the information as text messages, notes, call history, contact favorites, sound settings, configuration widget, etc. Of course, make sure that a backup of your phone before the restoration.
However, some issues--chronicled below--persist:
Random freezes or locks are an important claim for users after upgrading. The problem is the source of heated debate within the Apple discussion thread about 900 huge posts. The problem seems to manifest itself every time the iPhone goes to sleep, the user locks the screen, or just randomly. Buttons when the next user tries to use the phone, he or she is totally indifferent - the screen remains blank and pressing will not wake her. The only recourse for the user is required to perform a restore as described above.
Battery life is another important claim for users after upgrading and one that we found ourselves. So far, none of the usual fixes have solved a problem that others claim that happens even when the iPhone is idle. Regardless, we've noticed in our own 3GS iPhone battery life is significantly poorer after upgrading to iPhone OS 3.1.
Apple is clearly aware of the problem of battery life and is actively trying to resolve it by iPhone users perform in the studio. Users Participants will receive a special file that captures BatteryLifeLogging.mobilecongfig Power Log files from iPhone to sync with iTunes. The user sends the log files to Apple via e-mail or http://bugreport.apple.com. Hopefully with enough input, Apple will find the root cause of this problem and publish a correction in a future firmware update.
The slow performance is a complaint of some users, blaming the problem on the MobileMe synchronization. According to a post in the forums Skid Apple may solve the problem through these steps:
1. Launch the application settings
2. Go to Mail, Contacts, Calendars
3. Go to your MobileMe account
4. Turn contacts and calendars
5. When prompted, delete them from your iPhone
6. Reset the iPhone by holding the sleep and home buttons until the Apple logo.
7. Perform steps 1-5, but this time in turn contacts and calendar synchronization.
If these steps do not resolve the problem, another alternative is to remove your MobileMe account on your iPhone, do a restore, and set up your MobileMe account from scratch.
An unknown error (-50) was an error we encountered when syncing from iPhoto to our 3GS iPhone on another computer. According to Apple, all I had to do was sync with iTunes 9, who had not been installed on the second computer. After upgrading to iTunes 9, the problem disappeared.

Bricked IPhones caused by the operating system update 3.1 does not apply was a source of complaints from some unhappy iPhone users. Fortunately, there is a solution for most Bricking "" incidents, take the following steps to perform a factory reset of your iPhone:
1. Hold down the Sleep / Wake and Home until the iPhone resets.
2. When the Apple logo release Sleep / Wake, but do not release Home until you see the prompt to connect the iPhone to iTunes.
3. Connect your iPhone to the USB sync cable.
4. iTunes should launch. If not, start it manually.
5. Perform a restore of the iPhone firmware, configuration, applications and media.
If the above fixes don't help with your OS 3.1 issue, consider following the Apple iPhone Troubleshooting Assistant before investing your time in calling AppleCare or visiting the local Genius Bar.
