Prepare Your iPhone For International Travel

E-mail Print PDF

It seems like every week you read about someone traveling to other countries and using their iPhones, only to return home to their dismay as they get a fat bill that month from all the data roaming they have accumulated. Here in the US of A iPhone owners enjoy unlimited data from AT&T bundled into their already high monthly plans, but beware. When you go abroad those plans go out the window and you can fall victim to international rates and overages. There are ways to avoid this however, you can simply not bring your iPhone with you (aww no Tetris?!) or you can just not use your iPhone for date and calls when you travel. To disable the cash eating date roaming function it just takes a few extra steps.

When going abroad with your iPhone follow these tips to be sure you aren’t hit with some hefty roaming and date charges. First of all, go to “Settings,” then “General,” then “Network” and shut off “Data Roaming.” You can still make phone calls but you won’t be using data in the country you are currently in. Date roaming is where a majority of the cost come from when using your iPhone in other mobile networks. To take it a step further be sure turn off the “fetch” setting within your e-mail settings. Go to “Settings,” then “Mail, Contacts, Calendars,” then turn off “Fetch New Data.” These preventive steps will help you save some cash when traveling internationally with your iPhone.

Now if you really have to use your iPhone while overseas, for business use or you’re just really balling, you can get short-term international calling plans. These usually have a $5 fee to start and will lower your per-minute rate from 99 to 59 cents. If you plan on using date for emails, apps etc. You buy them at about $25 per 20 megabytes, sure that may seem pricey, but it’s a lot cheaper than what you would be spending if you happened to leave data roaming on.

Replace your iPhone 3G battery for $6

It's a sad fact of life: iPhone batteries wear out. Most users learn this about 18 months after they buy one, when the phone can barely last a day without running out of juice. Sadder still: With iPhones sealed up tighter than an astronaut's flight suit, there's no easy way to replace a worn-out battery. But there is a way. In fact, if your iPhone is out of warranty anyway (and at 18 months it undoubtedly is, unless you extended it) and you're reasonably handy with small tools, you can swap in... Read more...

Use an external microphone with the iPhone

I wanted to use an external microphone with my iPhone, so I could record audio from an event. Unfortunately, there aren't any cables that give you a real microphone input jack. Fortunately, I was able to find an unexpected solution: the Mini A/V cable that came with my digital camera! On one end, it has the three standard RCA plugs found on the front of every TV. On the other end, it's got a four-conductor mini plug that's the same as the iPhone's headphone jack. Just plug the cable into the... Read more...

How To Use Google Voice Without Jailbreaking Your iPhone?

Fairly simple, use bookmarklets and use Google Voice via iPhone Safari browser. You have not to Jailbreak Your iPhone .   Are basically little snippets of JavaScript bookmarklets saved as bookmarks in Safari and iPhone can do cool little things like, find a word / phrase in the web page, translate the content in another language etc.Although this process of using Google Voice is a bit 'boring, give it a try. We could wait another few weeks and hopefully AT & T out of this FCC... Read more...

Drop-down menus are easy - and even fun - to navigate.

It may not seem so, but Apple’s virtual keyboard quietly adapts to each task it’s asked to perform. When typing an email address into your Address Book, for example, only pertinent characters appear - that is, a plus, hyphen and underscore. Plus, a “.com” key appears anchored next to the @ symbol and period. And when writing a contraction, the iPhone is smart enough to immediately switch back to the letter layout after the apostrophe is pressed. Let’s see a BlackBerry do that. And... Read more...

How Do IPhone Users Find New Apps?

iPhone for Newbies: Honey, I shrunk the manual

Caveat Emptor: This is for newbies only. If you've been around, you probably don't need this. When I bought my last Verizon phone, it came with about three quarters of a pound of paper housed in three manuals allowing me to find just about anything through the index. Yeah, it was overkill -- but at least I knew where to go to learn about an option or feature. When I opened my iPhone 3GS, I quickly searched for the documentation to show me how use this puppy. All I found was an... Read more...
